I have been getting a lot of questions about the fifth book in the series (Tallak and Hazel’s story), and I figure it’s a good idea to make a post about it for everyone to see. While my reader group on Facebook and my newsletter subscribers already know the background for the delay, I haven’t posted publicly about it yet.
I had to take a break from writing for the past two years because of burnout and the grief over my father’s death. Both of these issues hit me really hard, and my creativity dwindled down to nothing. I’m not one of those authors who can write through crisis or personal upheavals. Taking a break was what I needed for my mental and emotional health, and to make sure I can keep writing great books in the future.
I made my way out of the burnout hole at the end of 2019, with the help of a new story idea that really excites me. It’s not Tallak and Hazel’s book, but rather a completely new project in a different world. I’ll post more details when I know I’m closer to finishing it.
Hazel and Tallak’s story is not canceled (large parts of it are already written), but at this time, I need to spend my creative energy on the idea that speaks most strongly to me, and that is the new project.
I don’t have a timeline for release yet—the whole coronavirus situation has upended all my plans. My five-year-old is home for the foreseeable future, which means I barely get any work done, and the virus crisis overall is stressful enough to shove me back into burnout if I’m not careful. Trying to write through this pandemic would be a bad idea for my mental health, so I’m taking it real slow for now.
I hope I’ll soon have better news for y’all, and I’m super excited to share this new project with you when it’s time!
Thank you all for understanding and for your patience waiting for the next book to come out.
